When we reviewed the Sphero as part of our Group Test of iOS-controlled toys, we mentioned that “putting Sphero through its paces is all about software. Happily, there’s plenty of it.” And as of recently, there’s even more. We charged up our little robotic orb and tested 11 Sphero-compatible apps. Go ahead, ask us if we had a ball. (We did, actually, but that’s doesn’t make the pun any less lame…) As a reminder, Sphero is $129.99 from getsphero.com.
bSphero (free, universal) The basic controller app for the Sphero lets you send your robotic ball on a course to roam the house and terrorize the cat. You can control Sphero’s movement and speed, change its color, configure basic trajectories, and keep its firmware updated with this app.
Sphero PinWheel(free, iPhone) Think of this app as an updated version of the Simon color- and pattern-matching game that ruled the ’80s. Colored lights blink on your Sphero ball, and you tap out the same color patterns on your iPhone to advance to more difficult levels.
Sphero ColorGrab(free, iPhone) The Sphero flashes colors, and you must snatch it off the table at precisely the right time, or a cartoon rabbit will mock you loudly. It takes precise timing, but it’s worth it to shut that rabbit up and snag a few points in the process.
Sphero Exile(free, universal) If you ever wanted to use a small robotic ball to help battle an alien invasion, your dreams have come true. This app uses the Sphero as a controller: you maneuver and rotate it to control your ship, repel an alien armada, and help save your robot civilization.
Sphero Golf(free, universal) It’s golf, but with a nifty robotic ball. Place the Sphero on the ground, set up a simple hole across the room (such as a sideways cup) to aim towards, and select the best club and swing speed on your iPhone or iPad. Then flick your finger or swing the iDevice, and watch your Sphero react like the world’s priciest golf ball.
Sphero Chromo(free, universal) You’ll hold your Sphero in your hand, using it as a wireless controller for this cool color-matching game. Rotate the Sphero towards the color in question to snag points and advance to the next level.
Sphero Draw N’ Drive(free, universal) The perfect marriage between art and remote-controlled robots, Draw N’ Drive lets you draw a path on your screen that your Sphero will follow in real life. You can even change the Sphero’s color as it rolls using the app’s color wheel.
Sphero Etch-o-Matic($0.99, universal) If you have fond memories of your old Etch-a-Sketch, you can’t argue with this. Pair your Sphero with your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, and the ball acts as a wireless remote control for an incredibly Etch-a-Sketch-like drawing program. Cool stuff and only 99 cents to boot.
Sharky the Beaver(free, iPhone) Sharky the Beaver is a 3D virtual character, and the augmented-reality app overlays him over your Sphero as you drive around, so it looks like this little critter is roaming your house. You can even take photos on the fly, if you want to capture the moment Sharky posed in front of the fireplace.
Last Fish($0.99, universal) Look, if you didn’t use a small robotic ball to help a video game fish find food, avoid goo, and escape other fish, how productive was your day, really? In Last Fish, you’ll use Sphero as a wireless remote control, helping your fish survive a toxic environment and the evil shadowfish. We love the spiffy arcade style.
